Why Enemies Cooperate and Allies Fight
The 2005 Nobel Prize went to two scholars who used game theory to illuminate the oldest questions in human affairs: Why do wars start? How is peace maintained? When does cooperation emerge among rivals, and when does it collapse among friends?
Robert Aumann, a mathematician, proved rigorously that long-term relationships change everything — rational players who will interact repeatedly can sustain cooperation even when each has every incentive to cheat in any single encounter. Thomas Schelling, a strategic thinker who advised governments during the Cold War, showed that conflict has its own counterintuitive logic — sometimes you gain power by limiting your own options, and the key to deterrence is making your threats impossible to back down from.
Schelling: The Strategy of Conflict
Thomas Schelling’s The Strategy of Conflict (1960) is one of the most original books in social science. Its central insight: conflict is not a zero-sum game. Even bitter enemies share common interests — both sides in a nuclear standoff prefer survival to annihilation. The challenge is coordination under hostility.

- In the Cold War, the distinction between conventional and nuclear weapons served as a focal point — a bright line that both sides recognized, even though there was no logical reason why a small nuclear weapon should be treated differently from a large conventional bomb
The paradox of self-binding:
- Schelling showed that in strategic situations, reducing your own options can increase your power. A general who burns the bridges behind his army removes the option of retreat — making his threat to fight to the death credible
- Nuclear deterrence works on this principle: if a nation can convince its enemy that retaliation is automatic and unstoppable, the enemy won’t attack. The key is making the threat credible by removing the ability to back down
- In negotiations, a union leader who publicly commits to a position (“we will strike if demands aren’t met”) gains bargaining power — because backing down would destroy their credibility
Tipping points and critical mass:
- Schelling also pioneered the analysis of tipping points — thresholds where small changes produce dramatic shifts. His model of racial segregation showed that even mild preferences for same-race neighbors can produce completely segregated cities — a result far more extreme than anyone intended
- This framework applies to bank runs, technology adoption, social norms, and any situation where individual decisions depend on what others are doing
Aumann: Repeated Games and the Logic of Cooperation
Robert Aumann provided the mathematical foundations for understanding long-term strategic interaction. His work answered a fundamental question: why do rational, self-interested agents cooperate?
Repeated games and the folk theorem:
- In a one-shot prisoner’s dilemma, defection is the only rational strategy. But if the same players interact repeatedly, with no known end date, cooperation can be sustained
- Aumann’s formalization of the folk theorem proved that in infinitely repeated games, virtually any outcome — including full cooperation — can be sustained as an equilibrium, provided players are patient enough and can punish defectors
- The mechanism: if you cheat today, I punish you tomorrow by refusing to cooperate. The threat of future punishment makes cooperation rational in the present. This explains why businesses maintain quality, why nations honor treaties, and why communities enforce social norms
Correlated equilibrium:
- Aumann introduced the concept of correlated equilibrium — a generalization of Nash equilibrium where players can coordinate their strategies through shared signals (like a traffic light). This is often more realistic than Nash equilibrium, because in real life, people use shared information to coordinate
- A traffic light is a correlated equilibrium: both drivers are better off following the signal than ignoring it, even though each could theoretically run the red light
Common knowledge:
- Aumann formalized the concept of common knowledge — not just “I know,” not just “I know that you know,” but the infinite chain: “I know that you know that I know that you know…” He proved that rational agents with common knowledge of each other’s beliefs cannot “agree to disagree” — if they share the same information, they must reach the same conclusions
- This has profound implications for financial markets (where disagreement drives trade), negotiations, and any situation where beliefs matter
The Complementary Vision
Aumann and Schelling approached the same problems from opposite directions:
- Schelling worked from real-world strategic problems — nuclear deterrence, racial segregation, arms control — and extracted general principles. His tools were thought experiments, historical examples, and brilliant intuition
- Aumann worked from mathematical axioms and proved theorems about what rational agents can achieve. His tools were formal proofs and precise definitions
Together, they showed that game theory isn’t just an abstract mathematical exercise — it’s a practical framework for understanding the most consequential human interactions: war, peace, trade, and trust.
Their 2005 Nobel Prize was awarded “for having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis.”
Explain It to a Child
Imagine you and your friend trade snacks every day at lunch. If you both share honestly, you both get variety. But one day you could give a bad snack and keep the good one. The problem?
